How old were you when you first started swimming? Do you remember that day? How did it feel?
I started taking swimming lessons at age five and began competitive swimming at age eight. Growing up, I was very energetic, and my parents always said I had more energy than they knew what to do with. They enrolled me in a variety of sports and summer camps, hoping it would help burn off some of that energy. However, none of those activities could keep up with me. Eventually, they signed me up for swimming, and it was the first sport that truly challenged me and gave me an outlet for all my energy. From that point on, I fell in love with the sport and have continued swimming ever since.
What was it about swimming that you fell in love with? Has that feeling stayed the same, or has it changed over time? If it has changed, can you describe how it has changed?
The reason I fell in love with swimming was because of the feeling of freedom I experienced in the water. As a kid, swimming always gave me a sense of peace, and I loved the weightless feeling that no other sport could provide. It also sparked my passion for competition because swimming is such a demanding sport, and I’ve always enjoyed being challenged physically.
As I’ve gotten older, my love for swimming has continued to grow. I enjoy the pursuit of excellence and the journey the sport has taken me on. Swimming constantly pushes me to discover what I’m capable of, and I love the process of working hard every day to achieve my goals. It’s the challenge, the discipline, and the opportunity to keep improving that make me love the sport.
During the pandemic, there were times when pools weren’t accessible — how did you keep up with your training during that period?
During the pandemic, our pool was closed, so our team had to find another way to train. Instead of practicing in a pool, we swam in a nearby lake. Every morning, we would wake up before sunrise, and on colder days, we even had to wear wetsuits to stay warm. At the time, it wasn’t something I enjoyed, and there were definitely mornings when I didn’t want to get in the water. However, looking back, those practices taught me perseverance and commitment. Even when things weren’t ideal, we continued to work hard, and that dedication paid off by helping our team stay in shape and continue improving.
What do you think is the most important factor in improving your performance right now?
A very important factor in improving my performance is believing in myself and not putting unnecessary pressure on myself. There are times during both practice and competition when swimming becomes so physically demanding that I want to stop because of the pain and exhaustion. In those moments, I remind myself that the hard work I’m putting in now will pay off in the future.
One mindset that has helped me is remembering that the moments when I don’t want to get up, when I want to quit, or when I think I can’t keep going are often the moments that matter the most. Pushing through those challenges is where real growth happens. Those difficult moments build both my physical strength and my mental toughness, and they continue to shape me into a better swimmer and a stronger person.
Have you ever hit a wall? How did you deal with it?
One of the biggest walls I’ve had to overcome was straining my back in the middle of my summer training season. I was making great progress and was excited to keep improving, but the injury made even simple practices painful. There were days when I had to miss practice altogether or get out of the pool early because my back hurt too much. At the same time, I was balancing physical therapy along with morning and afternoon swim practices, which was both physically and mentally exhausting. It was one of the most challenging periods of my swimming career, but I stayed patient and trusted the recovery process. In the end, all of the hard work paid off. I dropped six seconds in my 400 IM and earned a spot on the USA National Junior Team. That experience taught me that setbacks don’t have to define your season—they can become the reason you come back stronger.
How do you balance your competition schedule with your schoolwork?
I balance my competition schedule with my schoolwork by staying in constant communication with my teachers, athletic director, and school counselor. My parents and I make sure the school knows my competition schedule well in advance so I can receive assignments early and stay on top of my coursework while traveling. When I return from competitions, I also make an effort to meet with my teachers before or after school to catch up on any material I missed. Staying organized and communicating proactively has allowed me to maintain strong grades while competing at a high level.
Are there any habits or routines in your daily life that you focus on to keep improving?
One habit I want to continue improving is my time management. During the school year, I often miss class because of training, travel, and competitions, so managing my time effectively is essential to staying on top of my schoolwork and maintaining strong grades. Better time management also allows me to prioritize recovery, get enough rest, and make time to study without feeling overwhelmed. Developing this habit will help me succeed not only as a swimmer but also as a student and in other areas of my life.
I hear your mom puts a lot of thought into your meals and nutrition — what’s your favorite thing she makes?
My favorite dish my mom makes is katsu curry. She always prepares it before big meets for good luck, and eating it never fails to give me a boost of energy.
How have your coach and teammates influenced you as a competitive swimmer?
My coach and teammates have played a huge role in helping me become the swimmer and person I am today. My coach has challenged me to push beyond what I thought I was capable of while also teaching me the importance of discipline, consistency, and trusting the training process. Even on the toughest days, my coach has always believed in me and encouraged me to keep improving.
My teammates have also had a big impact on my development. Training alongside athletes who share the same goals motivates me to work harder every day. We push each other through difficult practices, celebrate each other’s successes, and support one another through setbacks. Being surrounded by people who are committed to getting better has helped me grow not only as a competitive swimmer but also as a teammate and leader.
Is there a swimmer you look up to? What is it about them that you admire?
The swimmer I look up to the most is Michael Phelps. I admire him not only because of his incredible success in the pool but also because of his relentless determination to keep improving and be the best version of himself. His work ethic, discipline, and mental toughness have inspired me throughout my swimming career. What stands out to me the most is his mindset—he never settled for what he had already accomplished and was always striving to reach another level. That same drive for continuous improvement is something I try to bring to my own training and competition every day.
What do you enjoy doing outside of swimming? How do you unwind?
Outside of swimming, I enjoy spending time outdoors. Whether it’s hiking, backpacking, fishing, or simply hanging out with friends, being outside helps me relax and recharge. These activities give me a healthy balance away from the pool and allow me to unwind both mentally and physically. Taking time to enjoy nature and spend time with the people I care about helps me return to training refreshed and motivated.
What are your goals right now? And looking further ahead, what kind of swimmer do you hope to become?
My biggest goal for the future is to represent the United States at an international competition. I know achieving that dream will require hard work, dedication, and sacrifice, but I am committed to giving my best every single day to make it a reality. Every practice and every race is another opportunity to get one step closer to that goal.
I also hope to become the kind of swimmer who inspires others. I want to use the opportunities and talents I’ve been given to encourage younger athletes, show them what is possible through hard work and perseverance, and help them achieve their own goals. Being a positive role model and making an impact on others would mean just as much to me as any accomplishment in the pool.
